Appalachian Floral Herbalism with Ruth Shelton Workshop April 11th, 2026

Spring is in the air! We are thrilled to announce that Ruth Shelton "The Empirical Herbalist" will be back teaching at Natural Affinity!

I have always loved Ruth's teaching style! Having personally attended a few of her herbal workshops, she really brings her herbal knowledge and wisdom to share with everyone.

At this event she'll be covering everything there is to know about Floral Herbalism!

In herbalism, there are many modalities and ways to use and prescribe plants and herbs for conditions and illnesses. In this workshop we will focus on the gorgeous world of flowers- looking at them in 3 different ways-

Collective types of medicine where they shine-
flower essences, aromatherapy, floral baths and washes, teas, balms, lotions and skin care.

*Collectively and individually the areas of healing that they treat:

Emotional Issues,

Mental Issues

Issues of spirit

Issues of the external- skin, hair, nails

Individually - going through a bouquet of beauties and looking at specifically how and where they help so you can plant or use the one that best fits what you are experiencing.

Everyone will take home notes and a floral medicine of their own.

**About the Presenter:

Ruth Shelton is a master herbalist from East TN. She grew up in a small Appalachian town that helped shape her appreciation of well everything. She credits her ancestors and her grandmothers in particular as the most important influences in the kitchen, the garden and her own self hood. Every time she teaches about Appalachia it’s done in their honor.

She’s been practicing herbalism for almost 25 years and operates out of her Apothecary in Powell, TN but travels teaching herbalism all over the Midsouth.

We look forward to seeing everyone for this informative event!

*SOLD OUT Appalachian Vitality Brews & Parasite Purge Herbal Workshop March 8th, 2026

Appalachian Vitality Brews & Parasite Purge Herbal Workshop

Location: Natural Affinity 131 Cherry Street Dunlap, TN

Date: Sunday March 8th

Time: 1:30-4:30 Central

All are welcome to attend! Over the last several months we've had more men and women wanting to learn about herbs and how to incorporate them into their daily living. This will be a very informative workshop and it is my mission to share the knowledge that I have gained with each of you so that you will gain confidence and know how to work with herbal allies safely. Herbal Medicine is the People's Medicine & need not be complicated.

This Herbal Workshop is perfect for beginners and there is no prior knowledge required! This is going to be a dual-topic workshop where you will not only be learning how to use herbs for health & wellness but you will also be making your own herbal preparations to take home! There has been quite an interest in these topics so combining the two made perfect sense.

It is very important to build the body/system before doing a cleanse of any kind.

In the first half of this workshop, you will be learning about Appalachian Herbs for Vitality and how to prepare these herbal brews. Herbs that nourish & build your body's system back up after a long cold fall/winter. You'll also be learning about several nutrient-dense herbs, herbs that combat fatigue, support liver & kidneys, reduce inflammation and build the blood. There will be demonstrations & sampling of tea/infusions. You will be getting up close & personal with the herbs that we will be discussing. This includes making a few of your own herbal preparations to take home.

For the second half we will discuss natural approaches to a parasite purge/cleanse using plant-based protocols, including the role of bitter herbs and supportive digestive aides that are rooted in folk practices like spring/fall tonics. The 1st half of the workshop plays a crucial role in preparing oneself for a parasite cleanse. We will discuss specific herbs used to assist your body in getting rid of parasites, binders & different herbal preparations with these herbs and there will also be samples for you to try. There will be a lot of useful information covered here and there will also be time for questions.

Attendees will receive printouts on the topics we will be discussing and there will also be herbal tea & light refreshment for you to enjoy!

Be sure to bring something to write with and take notes in.

We will begin at 1:30. Our door will be open at 1:00 if you'd like to arrive a little early to get settled in.

Denisea & her husband Chris are the owners of Natural Affinity Apothecary & Handcrafted Herbal Essentials. Their storefront which they opened in May of 2012 is located in Downtown Dunlap, TN.

Her mother was born and raised in the beautiful Sequatchie Valley and as a result Denisea has spent much of her childhood and teenage years growing up in the Valley with fond memories of camping outdoors, fishing, countless hours playing in the woods & spending time on her Granny's front porch snapping beans! Much of her work is rooted in Appalachian & Folk Medicine Making. She has over a Decade of Herbal & Essential Oil Experience and she enjoys sharing the knowledge she has gained by teaching In-Person Immersive Workshops for 13+ years. To further her training she has attended numerous Herbal Workshops & yearly Herbal Conferences for well over 12 years in TN, AL and NC. In 2024 she completed the 6 month Healing Herbs Program in-person with Lisa Bedner and in 2025 she completed the 9 month Clinical Community Herbalist Program in-person with Leslie Williams. On warm days you'll find her outside barefoot in in their garden where she tends to the herbs she grows and many of which are used in her herbal preparations.
